My ultimate survival food in the "jungle", oh I mean in "UNM" here.
“Welcome to the jungle!” (Seniors of University of Nottingham in Malaysia, all the time)
As a student of the University of Nottingham in Malaysia (UNM), this was what being told by the seniors to me and 12/10 will still be told to our future juniors in this university.
By having no other food places that can be reached within walking distance outside of campus (unless you have a car to drive out to Semenyih town and Broga), one of the main food suppliers for the students is the on-campus cafeteria.
After 3+ years of study in UNM, one of the biggest and most common complaints I always see or heard is how bad the food on campus tastes or in another case, students are bored of on-campus food.

After studying here in UNM for 3+ years, it is unfair to say that the food from cafeteria hasn’t improved by a bit ever since the disastrous “Sodexo” moved out.
Sometimes, we just have to be optimistic in the midst of suffer ;) #deepquote
So, for this time's “YASSSS or PUI!” review session, I am not going to do reviews on very fancy food which requires much amount of effort and/or money to obtain but I am ranking the best fried chicken on campus!

Honestly speaking from my own point of view, I actually find the (some) fried chicken on campus pretty good and they are always my comfort food that I am able to find on campus.
Glad to be born in a multi-ethnic Malaysian society, since there are a variety of fried chicken on campus that tastes different based on the ways of cooking it in different food culture. Therefore, I’ve tried and ranked the fried chicken from Dapur Mas, the Mamak stall and the Chinese stall.
Here comes my review!
(WARNING: Please be advised that the content below contains reviews and photos which is not suitable for hungry readers or to be read at midnight. You've been warned.)
1. Ayam Goreng from Dapur Mas

Nice combination of batter and chicken meat as most of the time the chicken meat is fully covered by the batter that is still crunchy when served warm, although sometimes I found the batter a bit thick. I noticed that there were probably a change in the recipe of their fried chicken since one or two months ago, which tastes better for me.
However, my suggestion is to get it preferably during lunch hours while the batter of fried chicken is still crunchy compared to the a bit softened and greasy one out of lunch hour.
Btw I like the way the fried chicken is marinated and every time the smell travels around the hungry me whenever I pass by the the area.
Price is fair enough which costs around RM3-4 depends on the size of fried chicken.
Verdict: YASSSS

2. Fried chicken chunks from the Chinese stall

Perfect for people who prefers chicken breast.
The crunchiness is definitely there since it is constantly heat up, except that sometimes the chicken meat gets a bit too dry that it requires more time to chew on and hard to swallow. If you’d like a generous portion of meat in your meal, just head over to the Chinese stall after lunch hour in the afternoon or when you see two tubs of it are prepared to be served to the customers. Your luck would not be that bad if you wish for a generous portion from them.
The price is listed accordingly on the signboard inside their stalls, which is subject to change depends on the dishes you pick.
Verdict: Still OK-lah!
3. Fried chicken from the Mamak stall

The crispiness of the fried chicken skin was on point but other than that, the chicken meat tasted dry if compared to the ones from Dapur Mas, given that both were chicken breast meat. There isn’t much batter coating the fried chicken so maybe you’ll like it if you also like the way Ayam Goreng Rempah (spiced fried chicken) is prepared for the lack of fried chicken batter.
This could be my least favourite from the list.
The price is fixed at RM4 so remember to ask for a piece that you're satisfied with!
Verdict: Still OK-lah but incline to PUI!
My rankings for the fried chicken on campus:
Most favourite : Dapur Mas
Second : The Chinese stall
Least favourite : The Mamak stall
BONUS
If you have the opportunity to drive outside of campus in order to get food (or some nice fried chicken WOOTS), my recommendation would be the fried chicken from “Tok Man Nasi Lemak Kelate” that is situated near the Chinese and Tamil primary school in Semenyih town.

It is easily spotted for their big sign board and the signature mascot similar to the Hong Kong comic character “Lou Fu Ji” a.k.a Old Master Q.

One of the main reason that this is my favourite is because the fried chicken (breast) meat is always tender and not overcooked, since most of the time the fried chicken is cooked and served upon order when sold out.
Verdict: 25/10 YASSSS
Anyways, do feel free to leave your thoughts or comments if you have any other suggestions for fried chicken or even another choice of comfort food that we UNM students can find on and off campus!
